hi all!
thanks to tivo, i now have a few notes to share about the Miss Universe 2008 event... it was quite a dramatic year!
hosted by jerry springer and scary spice; this alone made the event pretty hilarious to watch. one can only hope that one day, the event will be hosted by the likes of neal patrick harris and amy winehouse!
looks like they are trying to update the event a bit - the national costume section was off the hook! while more than a few contestants looked like they pulled their costumes out of a bag at a stripper supply store, most of the costumes were still pretty impressive. i found the tribal and ethnic costumes to be the most interesting. those who wore formal wear dresses in the colors of their national flag were the least interesting, although Miss Estonia was probably the best of that ilk - with a bob and a fringe mini dress, she looked a bit like a flapper girl from the roaring 20s!
Miss Albania was rockin a gothic vampiress cape, and Miss Venezuela wore a red sequin / fuzzy tribal costume with a (presumably fake) septum piercing! Miss V. won the event overall, but Miss Thailand won the national costume section. i am not entirely convinced Miss Thailand's costume was... the most involved.... but her movement during the 'strike a vogue' moment was perhaps what tipped the judges in her favor. so much for the traditional pageant wave!
here are 15 of the national costumes: www.missuniverse2008.com/index.php
here are stills of most (if not all) the national costumes: seattlepi.nwsource.com/ae/mis...pV2.asp
here is a few u-tube links of costume videos: www.youtube.com/results
of course, one cant talk about this pageant without talking about- THE FALL OF MISS USA! www.youtube.com/watch oh dear. this poor lady. or perhaps her poor dress designer. someone made a big mistake, there!
Miss Columbia, on the other hand, rocked her formal wear fabric (comparatively): www.youtube.com/watch
i have no comment on the swimsuit competition. i would much prefer they showcase a talent section, instead of this. unfortunately, the interview section did not impress me much, either. MBRC project participants really rock these categories, i must say!
much love,
